To test how strongly design impacts business performance, the consulting firm McKinsey & Company followed more than 300 companies over a five-year period to examine the relationship between commercial success and design quality. One of the most compelling findings was that companies with outstanding design achieved revenue and shareholder returns growth at twice the rate of their competitors.

McKinsey developed an index based on hundreds of different design factors. Even small improvements were shown to increase profitability. Companies ranking in the top quartile of the index achieved revenue growth that was 32 percentage points higher over five years. These findings applied across industries including consumer goods, banking, and medical technology.
